Test Shots

No, not the Sinanju...

I am actually testing out my new camera. I have been wanting a new one for a while now, so I finally picked up the Canon A1000IS for a good price on the Yahoo Auction site (it's your friend). I mostly wanted it for the Image Stabilization (hence the IS). Taking pictures of a 2 year old is not very easy but so far this camera has done well. I have to play with it quite a bit more but the point and shoot settings produce good results. I also have been using the Macro setting. Here is a pic of the Aurora sticker I stuck into the Bazooka. I have just started preping the bazooka for painting but will spend a little more time thinking how I want to use the two colours so it matches up well with my rifle.

I have also been working on the black/gold pieces. Here they are all primed.
And their first coat of semi-gloss black.
The shield primed and ready.
Semi-gloss black.
Then gold.
My idea is to give it a coat of topcoat, use the waterslide decals that came with the Sinanju as a mask for the center piece (and possibly the edges), paint the semi-gloss black on again, and then remove the waterslides immediately after leaving the gold untouched. Hmm.. Will it work...

  1. That's a nice gold.

I'm interested to see how this plan of yours goes.

I hear you about taking pictures of a 2 year old. I aveage about one in ten not blurry photos.

  2. That's a pretty good idea, it makes sense since they give you the perfect size cuts for masking. The hard part will be how well will they come off without taking the paint under it off.

  3. That's what I was thinking too. but if I apply a good coat of the gloss then I have some cushioning to work with when removing the decals. It works in theory. Communism works in theory...

  5. I like the idea of using the stickers for masking, thats what you meant for the center emblem and the border, right? (not the waterslides)

  6. G.G. -yes, that was my original thought. to use the stickers for the masking, americansalaryman has generously given me the ones he didn't use. I may end up using the waterslide for the the emblem though depending on which one masks better. I can't really hand paint because the gold is sprayed over the gloss black to give it a darker colour and if I hand paint or gundam marker it won't be the same shade of gold.... I created difficulties for myself, I think.

  7. Great idea indeed. I haven't thought about that before, I am going to steal this idea from u. =) Stickers for masking, now how did I missed that? ha But one possible concern I have with stickers is that they bond stronger than your regular masking tape. So my question is does it leave any mark after your peal them away?

As for waterslide, I think those probably won't do well serving as masking. Since a coat of paint is very similiar to a clear coat, which we use to protect the waterslide decals. So getting them out after painting would probably be a pain, not to mention possible scatches to the paint job. But I have not expriement with this before, pls tell me how it goes if you tried it.

  8. I had also pondered how the adhesive on the gold foil stickers would react. Would they leave residue? That is why I decided to put a coat (or two) of gloss top coat on before the stickers so I can peel away the stickers and then gently sand/polish away any residue while hopefully not damaging the paint. I will let you know how it works. At worst, if it fails, I just mask with masking tape.
