Gunpla (ガンプラ) as it's known in Japan refers to Gundam plastic model. For those of you who don't know Gundam are basically giant robot fighting suits, or some such thing. I don't watch the anime so I have no idea.
I recently started working for an internet based hobby company here in Japan that deals in all types of Japanese hobby products and sells these Gundam plastic models as well. I thought I would take the plunge and try one out.
... and I love it! It really is a lot of fun and can be completed quickly and easily, or with much difficulty depending on how much detail you wish to get into. This is a picture of my first one ever. It is the Shin Musha Gundam. Ya.. I have no idea, either.
Gundam models range from the small 1/144th scale easy to put together to the 1/60 'Perfect Grade' that can take a long time. I seem to have dropped myself right in the middle as my first kit was a 'master grade', and after spending many enjoyable evenings assembling it I don't want to switch to the easier kits. Essentially they are the same as any plastic model with pieces coming on a frame, or sprue, that you clip off and then assemble. Gundam models, however, require no glue or paint, unless you want to.
I had such an enjoyable time with this one I promptly picked up another one.
well now. quite humble beginnings!
